Expert meeting University of Oslo: ‘Making Canons: Critical Perspectives and Gendered Processes.

The project has established a broad humanities platform for comparative studies in how gender is implicated in processes of canonization. It has shown how writers arguing for women’s full humanity, rights and equality have found in the canons a common ground of communication and debate. They have argued in similar ways across religious, literary and philosophical genres by confirming and subverting views of gender found in established canons.

The project has further demonstrated how European feminism has been formulated and developed as a form of conversation and contestation over authorized texts. The project has added historical depth and detail to the understanding of feminism as a movement of thought, and has suggested how important it is to think diachronically and remember the past when developing a feminism for the future.
